Autumn sees a whole host of film festivals across Virgin Express destinations. Close to home in Ghent is the influential Flanders International Film Festival (11-21 October, tel: +32 (0)9 242 80 60, www.filmfestival.be), which attracts 100,000 visitors each year because of its unique focus on film music. The festival is now in its 33rd year and last year the likes of Mike Leigh, Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg attended. This year the festival plays host to a Stanley Kubrick exhibition (6 October-7 January, www..filmfestival.be/stanleykubrick), organised in close collaboration with his wife Christiane Kubrick and long-standing executive producer Jan Harlan. Glean what you can about this mastermind of cinema by viewing costumes, props, photos, written documents and more.

In the Flagey and Vendôme districts of Brussels, enjoy a visual fiesta at the 14th annual Spanish and Latin American Film Fest (6-21 November, www.intercommunication.be). This year’s festival focuses on documentaries and music in particular.

In Geneva’s Théâtre du Grütli you can catch films by up-and-coming directors and writers at the Cinéma Tout Ecran festival (30 October-5 November, www.cinema-tout-ecran.ch). There’s even a Children’s Day for budding film fans.

Over in Barcelona, film enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with short films, from animation to documentary, from 40 countries across the world viewable at Mecal – Barcelona International Short Film Festival (21-29 September, www.mecalbcn.org) at the CCCB exhibition centre. A few weeks later the same venue hosts a screening of documentaries, related seminars and awards at the Docupolis Film Festival (4-8 October, www.docupolis.org).

And the same month, El Filmoteka hosts Barcelona’s Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (14-23 October, www..cinemalambda.com), showing shorts, features and documentaries with a gay or lesbian theme. Madrid’s Gay and Lesbian Festival (2-12 November, www.lesgaicinemad.com) is just a few weeks later.

Germany’s 14th annual Film Fest Hamburg (5-12 October, www..filmfesthamburg.de) is a forum for everything, from arthouse flicks to kids’ films and mainstream movies.
